Preschool

Preschool ARC Newsletter to parents

Preschool is designed to help students get comfortable in the water; this is a child's first class without parents in the water.  To enter preschool aquatics, participants must be three to five years old.  Jenison High School Aquatics Center swim lesson class size for preschool aquatics is held to a strict maximum class size of one instructor for four students.  The goal of preschool aquatics is to be safe and comfortable in the water.

Preschool skills include blowing bubbles, treading water, arms on front (ice cream scoops), backstroke arms, kicking on front and back, and opening eyes under water with assistance from the instructor.

Safety day topics include using a life jacket, recognizing a lifeguard, how to call for help, and how to stay safe around aquatic environments.

 

Level 1: Introduction to Water Skills

Level One is designed to help students feel comfortable in the water. To enter level one participants must have passed preschool aquatics or be five years old or older.  Jenison High School Aquatics Center swim lesson class size for level one is held to a strict maximum class size of 1 instructor for 5 students.  The goal of level one is to be comfortable swimming with some assistance and going under water.

Level one skills include blowing bubbles, treading water, arms on front (ice cream scoops), backstroke arms, kicking on front and back, and opening eyes under water.

Safety day topics include using a life jacket, recognizing a lifeguard, how to call for help, and recognizing an emergency.

 

Level 2: Fundamental Aquatic Skills

Level two is designed to help students gain independence in the water.  To enter level two participants must have passed level one lessons. Jenison High School Aquatics Center swim lesson class size for level two is held to a strict maximum class size of 1 instructor for 6 students.  The goal of level two is to be comfortable performing skills independently.

Level two skills include swimming on front independently, swimming on back independently, kicking with a kick board, and floating without assistance.

Safety day topics include using a life jacket, recognizing a lifeguard, how to call for help, and recognizing an emergency.

 

Level 3: Stroke Development

Level three is designed to help students build endurance and learn stroke technique. To enter level three participants must have passed level two.   Jenison High School Aquatics Center swim lesson class size for level three is held to a strict maximum class size of 1 instructor for 6 students.  The goal of level three is to learn the basic techniques of swimming, build endurance and begin to learn the strokes.

Level three skills include rotary breathing, front crawl, treading water, elementary backstroke, and backstroke.

Safety day topics include using reach or throw, don't go, swimming to a life jacket and putting it on, and rules for big lakes.

 

Level 4: Stroke Improvement

Level four is designed to help students learn the six strokes, and to build endurance. To enter level four participants must have passed level three. Jenison High School Aquatic center swim lessons class are held to a strict maximum class size our maximum class size is  1 instructor to 6 students in a class. The goal of level four is to be comfortable with all six strokes.

Level four skills include front crawl, back crawl, butterfly, breast stroke, side stroke and elementary back stroke.

Safety Day topics include swimming to a life jacket and putting it on,trowing assists with a ring buoy and rules for large bodies of water and rip currents.
